Inflation – CPI climbs to 6.52% in Jan from 5.72% in Dec

Retail Inflation or CPI(General) increased to 6.52% in January. This is higher than 5.72% reported for December 2022 and 6.01% for January 2022. Rural areas continue to witness higher inflation than urban centers.

The Consumer Food Price Index was at 5.94% in January 2023, up from 4.19% in December 2022.

The high inflation rate continues to confound central banks across the world. RBI Governor has time and again acknowledged the challenges being posed by uncertain environment leading to sticky inflation numbers. More recently, policy makers were expecting the inflation to subside and hoping they would not have to anymore weigh the trade-off between growth and controlling runaway prices.
